What’s Inside: Chia

Most horse owners love to use flax products in their horse feed—be it oil or ground flax seed. But we have opted to use chia instead. Why?

In recent years this little seed has broken out of the toy market and taken the stage as a super food. You may put a scoop in your smoothie before heading to the barn, or make a sweet pudding for dessert. But did you know that chia is as much a super food to your horse as it is for you?

Have you heard of the Tarahumara Aztecs? They are known to run extraordinarily long distances for both travel and sport, wearing very little clothing and no shoes. Incredibly, the Tarahumara can run all day fueled on just a handful of chia seeds. These seeds may be tiny, but they are mighty.

Chia are not only high in Omega 3’s, but other incredible compounds including anit-oxidants and vitamin E. They have been implicated in everything from cancer prevention to hoof health, making them the perfect multi-purpose ingredient in your horse’s health.

In TruBar, we lean on chia for digestive support including colic prevention and gastric ulcer treatment. Additionally, chia is great for allergy relief, hoof health, metabolic conditions, skin and coat health, and more. It has hight levels of limiting amino acids, helping your horse to absorb more protein from the rest of their diet for muscle recovery, skin and coat health, and strong hooves. They also can help your horse to develop sustained, focused energy, hydrate after a workout, and even have minerals that help the body absorb more calcium.

With so many benefits, chia was an obvious choice to include in our TruBar repetoir. You’ll see the results in your horse too!
